29 October 1944

This morning we were in sight of land. Passed through the straits (China) and into Milne Bay, New Guinea. Had our first look at the real jungle. Thick growth right down to the water’s edge. Many coconut palms, mangroves and other jungle growth. Many native huts and some very nice houses along the channel. Evidently belong to plantation owners.

At 10:00 AM ship docked at Gilligili on Milne Bay. Excellent harbor facilities which permit ships of this size to pull up to the very shore. Spent the day at dock taking on fresh water, as our supply is getting quite low because of the change in orders. Typical tropical jungle here. O.T.s in small boats brought coconuts out to ship in exchange for oranges, apples, etc.
